Earlier in the week, Glen Savoie took a break from door-to-door campaigning to participate in a debate held at Simond’s High School.
Canadian history students had an opportunity Tuesday to grill provincial election candidates in Saint John Fundy and Saint John East on how they will manage the province’s burgeoning debt and how they will ensure that, as voters, they have a say in major changes in government policy.
Saint John-East Liberal candidate Kevin McCarville told the group that the NB Power deal proved that the democratic system works.
Savoie, who took exception to the view that the system worked as it was supposed to, said it comes down to “a simple fact: this government spent millions of dollars on a deal that they had no intention of you ever having you have a say in. It was only by people standing up and demonstrating at the Legislature doors that made a difference.”
Another question, posed by student Trevor Carson, dealt with how parties intend to pay for the campaign promises they are making.
Savoie told the group that the Conservative platform has gone through a cost-analysis process and will correct system inefficiencies to offset costs.
